The Whole Noyse

A history of civic music in Great Britain from the earliest records to the mid-seventeenth century.

A by-product of the record research in early drama (principally Records of Early English Drama) is a compilation of documentary evidence for professional musicians in the employ of towns and boroughs.  The usual term for these performers was 'waits', and even quite small boroughs hired at least one musician to perform at ceremonial occasions and civic feasts.  The documentary evidence for their activities is spread over the volumes of the REED project; I am collecting this material in a comprehensive database with a view to writing their history.
